LBS 000

The huge ceramic anchors suspended from steel cables must weigh about two hundred kilos each, yet the title of this monumental installation is LBS 000: zero pounds. One by one, the eighteen sculptures – white, near-identical in size and shape except for their individual phallic protrusion – are set in motion by small computer-controlled devices that gently press against the cables, until all the anchors are swinging back and forth in a rhythmic choreography. Regularly distributed across the exhibition space, the rocking anchors form an ever-expanding field of peaceful motion, like the sea on a tranquil day. Their mass is undeniable, inevitable, evoking forces in life that none of us can control. Somehow, LBS 000 masterly uses weight and repetition to create an experience of lightness and freedom, leaving it up to us to figure out if this paradox could somehow be transposed to our own lives.
