Sculpture Requiem

For Sculpture Requiem, Ruimers decided to recycle dozens of unsold ceramic sculptures from earlier periods in an extraordinary auction: any work that didn’t sell, would fall directly to its destruction, accompanied by the live performance of a requiem that Berrie Kolmans had composed for the occasion. By letting the audience decide the fate of his art, Ruimers made them complicit: not to bid, not to value the sculptures, was to doom them. Regardless of the outcome, Sculpture Requiem reflects on the cyclic debate in the Netherlands about the social valuation and public funding of art. At the same time, it is an acknowledgement that art is meaningless when nobody sees it. With the meticulous staging of the performance, Rob takes back control over the valuation of his work while he bids farewell to the works that leave his studio – a sacrifice perhaps, to free up the future.
